Practical farming. Stronger businesses. Better landscapes.
A future for farming with nature.
About Moorwild
It starts with farming.
Moorwild works with farmers, landowners, researchers and organisations to develop practical projects that strengthen farm businesses and improve the environment. Based on the Somerset Levels and Moors, our work brings together first-hand farming experience, farmer collaboration and environmental project development.
Lowland agricultural peat is working farmland as well as an important carbon store. Moving towards wetter conditions raises practical questions about what farms can produce, how land can be managed and how businesses can remain viable.
Moorwild explores approaches including grazing, willow and other crops suited to wetter conditions, connecting peat protection with useful products, farm livelihoods and practical land management. Paludiculture means growing and harvesting crops on wet or rewetted peat.
"We believe the future of farming isn't about choosing between food and nature. It's about working out how to deliver both."
Experience rooted in farming
Founded by Fi Holder, a Somerset livestock farmer, registered ADOPT facilitator and 2027 Nuffield Farming Scholar, Moorwild connects practical farming with research, environmental delivery and regional collaboration.
A new chapter
Fi has been awarded a 2027 Nuffield Farming Scholarship
Sponsored by McDonald’s UK, her study will explore how farms can build profitable futures while supporting nature, with a focus on marginal land, floodplain grazing, native cattle and wetter farming.

Farming needs to work
in the real world.
Farmers manage much more than food production. Soil, water, livestock, wildlife, labour, weather, regulation and the financial health of the business all have to work together.
Moorwild sits in that complicated middle ground. We are interested in environmental ambition that can survive contact with a real farm — and in productive agriculture that leaves the land in better shape for the future.
01
Quality Produce
Farming should produce something valuable.
Good food and useful products remain central to what farms are for.
02
Environmentally Positive
Nature is part of the farming system.
Soil, water, wildlife, carbon and landscape should be strengthened through good management.
03
Economically Sustainable
The farm underneath it has to survive.
Environmental change will only endure if the people managing the land can build viable businesses around it.
Innovation & ADOPT
Got a farming problem
worth solving?
Some of the best agricultural innovation starts with a farmer saying, "There must be a better way of doing this."
Fi’s registered ADOPT facilitator role can support farmers to shape a practical question and plan an application. Project leadership, funding and delivery roles are confirmed with the partners involved.
You don't need a fully formed research project before contacting us. A practical question is enough.

Our farm
Tested in the
real world.
Moorwild's thinking is rooted in our own farming experience on the Somerset Levels and Moors.
Fi’s experience managing cattle and seasonally flooded grassland grounds Moorwild’s work in the realities of animal welfare, infrastructure, labour, food production and farm viability.
